The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Annie Fiery Barrows & Mary Ann Shaffer
The Isle of Guernsey lies so close to France in the English Channel that the Germans were able to occupy this tiny bit of England during World War II. Many of the occupants' children were sent away prior to occupation and rightly so, as the Germans promptly confiscated most of the food. After the islanders gather in defiance of curfew to share the treat of a contraband pig, some are captured by the Germans on the way home. A quick-thinking participant invented a book discussion group as a cover. Because they encouraged cultural undertakings, the Germans released the townsfolk and allowed them to continue meeting. Their letters, sent to a famous London columnist, create a vivid and humorous portrait of a courageous community's response to captivity.
