The Story of a Marriage
by Andrew Sean Greer
Although I want to praise this novel prodigiously, I can say virtually nothing about it because the plot is loaded with jaw-dropping surprises. Housewife Pearlie Cook begins her story with the sentence, “We think we know the ones we love.” What she doesn’t know about her husband is brought to the surface by a stranger who offers her a substantial sum to leave her marriage. Set between World War II and the Korean War, Pearlie’s story reflects upon the nature of marriage, war, and the mores and mood of the ’50s.
