A. D.: New Orleans after the Deluge by Josh Neufeld
A striking journalistic graphic novel about Hurricane Katrina and its afermath.
Neufeld’s webcomic-turned-book pulls its stories from both news
media archives and first person interviews conducted during and after
the Hurricane Katrina disaster. He chronicles the stories of seven
diverse families who weathered (or fled from) the storm, painting deft
portraits of their lives before Katrina and of their trials in its
wake, years later. Although he doesn’t gloss over the government’s
inability to effectively handle the disaster, Neufeld avoids dragging
A.D. into the mire of politics, instead focusing on the
bravery and cooperative spirit exhibited by ordinary and disparate
individuals in the most horrific moments of their lives.
