If you could reach into a book… what would you pull out?

When I opened to the first page of this book I did a double take and laughed out loud… and then I couldn’t stop reading. Hines’ new urban fantasy introduces a different framework of magic, where the gifted can pull items out of books. Isaac Vanio is working in an Upper Peninsula public library, cataloging books for magical potential, when he is visited by a trio of vampires. From that point on there’s plenty of action, thoughtful development of a really cool magic system, and convincing evidence that Isaac is a role model librarians can get behind. As a local to the Greater Lansing Area, Hines abuses some of my favorite haunts and he kept me up late trying to decide which books I’d use to build my own arsenal… but this is definitely one of my new favorites! With fantasy, science fiction and metafiction—this might appeal to fans of Simon Green’s Nightside (starting with Something From the Nightside) or Drood series (starting with The Man with the Golden Torc), Jo Walton’s Among Others, or John Scalzi’s RedShirts.
