John Connolly’s The Gates is hilarious, a little scary, and a fabulous read. In it Samuel Johnson was just trying to show a little initiative by trick-or-treating three days early but that puts him in the area of 666 Crowley Road when his neighbors, the Abernathy’s, open a small gap to Hell. Can one young boy and his trusty dachshund lead the fight to stop Hell from opening its gates into our world? Fans of Christopher Moore (A Dirty Job), Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett (Good Omens), and Lemony Snicket (A Bad Beginning) should give this a try.

And while the book itself is fabulous, listening to the audio version read by Jonathan Cake only added to the story. His voices for each character and comic timing are perfect.
