When I imagine the Old West, I, don’t tend to think of African Americans. But this is far from the truth. They were very much a part of the Old West. They were soldiers, cowboys, and yes, even lawmen.  In Bad News for Outlaws, Vaunda Nelson tells the story of former slave, Bass Reeves, who became one of the most effective and feared U.S. Marshalls to serve under the legendary Judge Isaac Parker in Indian Territory after the Civil War.  This is an informative read for youth about an often misunderstood period of our nation’s history.
