Oscar is different. Does that mean he isn't real?
What makes a child real? When is magic a gift and when is it a crutch? The exploration of these and many other questions reminded me of a middle grade version of the work of Ursula K. Le Guin.
Oscar is content in his life as the magician's hand on the enchanted island of Aletheia. He has a special way with herbs, knowing just how to harvest, prepare and blend them for Master Caleb. But when things start to go wrong and Oscar has to mind the shop he is faced with all his faults. He has trouble understanding people, can't look them in the eye, and unintentionally makes people angry.
There is much to love about this book: Oscar himself, his friendship with the healer's apprentice Callie, and the twists and turns of the story. Reminiscent of classic fairy tales, The Real Boy is a unique and thought-provoking story.
