Yes, he can slay dragons. But can he pass geometry?
Johnston has created a world almost like our own, except for dragons are real, and they love to eat carbon. Hence, the need for dragon slayers to protect humanity, especially as carbon use increases. Owen is from an illustrious family of dragon slayers and is destined to fight dragons. Siobhan is a nerdy musician who befriends Owen his first day at a new high school and finds out he want her to be more than friends. He wants her to be his bard. I love how Siobhan tells their story. How much they are real teenagers- sarcastic and funny and intensely loyal. Plus, the book includes clever alternate history- it is set in Canada and Michigan is an abandoned desolate waste overrun with dragons because Henry Ford brought too much carbon to the state. How can you not want to read that?
