Sum It Up

Pat Summitt is legendary in the world of women’s collegiate basketball.  She coached the University of Tennessee’s Lady Volunteers for 38 seasons and led them to eight NCAA championships.  In 2011, she was diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and subsequently stepped down as head coach in 2012. Sum It Up is a memoir of her career in basketball as both a player and a coach. 

This book was interesting because the beginning of Summitt’s coaching career coincided with the establishment of Title IX, which dramatically improved the opportunities available for girls and young women to fully participate in sports.  Through her story, readers will get a glimpse of the inequality that existed before this legislation was enacted and how its implementation opened the door for aspiring female athletes.
