The Last Forever

Following the loss of her mother, Tessa and her father take off on a spontaneous road trip that leads to unexpected places and people. Both are struggling to cope with their loss and with each other. When Tessa is left at her grandmother’s house on a small island in the Northwest, she meets Henry Lark. Tessa has a rare plant left to her by her mother that she is determined to keep alive. With the help of Henry, Tessa makes it her mission to save the plant, but they have to find out what it is first. Henry and the plant become the catalysts through which Tessa learns about love, loss, and forgiveness. Each chapter begins with the description of a different seed. They are interesting bits of information that also metaphorically support the plot and character development.  The Last Forever is a character-driven and bittersweet story that thoughtfully touches on relationships and sexual identity issues. It is at turns funny and engaging as Tess strives to navigate life without her mother. Recommended for fans of Sarah Dessen and Elizabeth Scott and/or fans of realistic teen fiction.
