British quirkiness set in a gorgeous Cornish landscape

Despite the title, this is not a story about the guy who invented those thick-soled boots worn by generations of English cops and hooligans.  Instead, it’s a dryly humorous TV series about Dr. Martin Ellingham, a grumpy yet extraordinarily talented surgeon who leaves his London practice and takes a job as a GP (general practitioner) in the small Cornish seaport of Portwenn after he develops a fear of blood.

This series is wonderfully slow-paced, allowing us time to savor the beauty of rural Cornwall and to get to know the characters, who, though often eccentric, never become caricatures.  (And I’d like to point out to my fellow Yoopers that the folks in Portwenn are no strangers to the Cornish pasty.)

I’d recommend this to any fan of British comedy.  Just don’t blame me if you have a sudden urge to visit Cornwall.
