The War That Saved My Life

Ada's been cooped up with an abusive mother her entire life, her mobility limited by a clubfoot. When WWII begins everything changes. Children are evacuated from London at and Ada refuses to be separated from her brother. Ada's sheer determination to do what she sets her mind to is extraordinary. This is a war story, a family story, a story about figuring stuff out from scratch, and a horse story (if only I had a pony named Butter!). This is one of those books that at the end elicits a sigh of contentment at a story well told. I think adults will enjoy it as much as middle-schoolers. I know I did.
