Labyrinth Lost

Alejandra is a bruja who has bottled up her very powerful magic for years, hiding that it had manifested from the rest of her family… but it won’t be held back any longer. When it surges up at high school when a bully attacks her best friend, her family starts plans to celebrate her Deathday… the day when she receives the blessing of her ancestors. But Alex doesn’t want it and actively tries to get rid of her powers, and as a result a botched spell exiles her family to Los Lagos, a land in between life and death controlled by a banished power-hungry bruja.

Alex must learn to accept her powers and her place in the world, and save her family with the help of her best friend Rishi and Nova, a young brujo with a shady past.

 

Córdova offers a fast-paced quest in richly imagined worlds. I appreciated the subtle romance as Alex is attracted to both her companions to some degree. I loved the play on Spanish and Ecuadorian myth and religion creating the rich background for this lovely coming of age story. I’m looking forward to more about the Brooklyn Brujas.
