Don’t be scared off by the title - there are almost no snakes in this book.
Dill’s family history, and his father’s recent scandal and imprisonment, mean that he is ostracized from most of the community. Travis buries as much of himself as he can in his favorite epic fantasy series, in an attempt to avoid provoking his father’s rage. Lydia chafes against the stereotypes and assumptions made by her town and her wider blogging circle. The three of them depend on their friendship with each other to get them through their senior year, but when tragedy strikes one, the other two are forced to reevaluate who they are, as friends and as people.
I really only picked this book up because it was for my book club, but it has turned out to be one of my favorites of the books we have read this year. It also almost made me cry in the middle of Starbucks. Worth it, though.
