Sweetland

Sweetland by Michael Crummey was the October fiction title for the Holt-Delhi book discussion group. I stumbled across it on hoopla, and was thrilled to hear it read to me. John Lee, the narrarator, fleshes out the characters of this tiny island community off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Moses Sweetland's ancestors were among the earliest settlers, and have fished to survive in the years since. Now Moses is the lone holdout for leaving the island. The Canadian goverment has offered each family a sum of money to move away, as they cannot afford to continue services to such a remote place. Moses is tough, funny, sad; unforgettable.
