Night Passage

One day, my young nephew (at the time about 17) says, "Ooo I'm into this one band; have you heard of them?  The Beatles?"

 

I love it when something that has been around since - say, the sun - finally makes it's way into my life and sure enough I find it's amazing!  Yes, I have been listening to the Beatles since I was about aged 6, so we're not talking about that.

 

We are talking about Robert B Parker, whose novels I have seen about a fabillion times and have sworn I would eventually read.  So I finally picked up "Night Passage", the first in the Jesse Stone series, and finished it in about 45 seconds.  Or two days, depending if you like accuracy or hyperbole.  And though this novel is a very fast read, it's not because the characters aren't interesting, in depth, or complex.  It's just hard to put down! 

 

Jesse is a smart cop who keeps things close to the chest.  He is interesting, fun, and a realistic hero; cause you know, he drinks. And dates. And he's divorced. He's a real guy.  But a real GOOD guy as well.  He may be on the quiet side, but when he talks, what he says matters.  In fact, I'm about ready for book three and sort of scolding myself for not picking up the series ages ago.  So don't be a goof; if you're a fan of mysteries and cops, you'll run right through this series.
