"Lord of the Flies," only funnier
This book is about more than thirteen teen beauty contestants getting stranded on a mysterious island after a plane crash. It's about the commercialism that constrains what is considered feminine, the objectification and exploitation of women, the ridiculousness of pop culture, and about how you can wear sequins and still be tough.
As the contestants struggle to survive and combat the island's other nefarious occupants, they learn to drop their facades and become something even more beautiful--strong young women, all while still practicing their dance numbers in case they are rescued in time for the competition.
The audiobook is read so fabulously that I was surprised to find out that it was read by the author and not a professional actress. She performs a different accent for each character (Miss Texas, Miss California, Miss Arkansas, etc.) and adds to the humor of her satirical story.
This book is so fantastic that it will having you singing the fictional boy band "Boyz will B Boyz" hit "Girl, Let Me Shave Your Legs Tonight" while practicing your "sparkle hips" and three-quarter stance--it's a great story that teens as well as adults will enjoy.
