A modern adaptation of a classic book
Eligible is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I initially read this book because it was selected by my book discussion group. It turned out to be a fun, light read that I really enjoyed. One of the things that I really liked about it was that it is mostly set in Cincinnati, Ohio, a city I am very familiar with. It’s always fun to read books that are set in places in which you have a connection. Familiar street names, local food and activities can bring back pleasant memories associated with a place.
Honestly, I have never read Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. So after reading Eligible I wanted to know whether its plot is similar to the original story. But instead of reading the 400+ page classic, I decided to peruse Marvel’s graphic novel version. I think adaptations are great way for nonliterary readers to become familiar with classic literature and culturally relevant stories. On the other hand, I’m not quite ready to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!
