Painful, eye-opening, important
Roxane Gay did not want to write this book--pulling out, examining, and writing about a life-changing horrific incident and its consequences. But that’s exactly why she needed to do it. This is a hard but necessary read, really looking at what it can mean to be obese in America. And to remind people that there are often very painful reasons a person may get that way. For Gay it’s a brutal childhood rape that makes her want to protect herself by being bigger. She explores self-image, societies’ treatment of people who are overweight, violence against women. It’s not the feel good story of someone who’s worked it all out and lost all the weight... but it is a raw and necessary survivor’s story.
