A uniquely American story of music & love
Leeba Groski is from an orthodox Jewish family and is an aspiring song writer that works for Chess Records. Red Dupree is an African American blues guitarist who left the oppression of the South in hopes of hitting it big in Chicago’s blues scene. As a couple they are very compatible, but their relationship is not acceptable in 1950s America. This is the fictional account of their struggle to stay together. Their story conveys a message about the enduring power of love, against the odds, during a time that our society frowned on intercultural relationships. I really enjoyed this book, because it is a wonderfully crafted work of historical fiction. This tale of forbidden love is woven against the backdrop of the true story of the Chess brothers. This is the legendary duo that created a record label that was instrumental in desegregating the American musical landscape. If you are a fan of the blues and early R&B, you’ll really enjoy Windy City Blues.
