An American Marriage

I'm always jealous when I hear someone describe a book with "I couldn't put it down." I love to read, but have a short attention span and find it way too easy to put a book down. So when I say that I couldn't put this book down, that really means something! Written from alternating viewpoints in letter form (two approaches that are very friendly to the easily-distracted reader), An American marriage is the story of Celestial and Roy, newlyweds who find themselves living a nightmare when Roy is falsely accused of a crime. The book touches on everything from race relations in the South to gender roles, loyalty, friendship and what makes a family. The characters came to life so acutely that to even refer to them that way seems inaccurate; Celestial, Roy and the people in their orbit continued to echo in my thoughts long after I finished reading.
