The pediatrician whose research was at the heart of exposing the Flint water crisis
Dr. Mona’s memoir is a highly readable, engaging, inside look at the Flint water crisis from someone with the perfect background, in the right place at the right time, with the right friends and colleagues and a stubborn determination to protect her patients. In it she discusses her roots in environmental advocacy and degrees in Natural Science, Public Health and Medicine and her upbringing in Michigan as the child of Iraqi immigrants. But she also looks at the plight of Flint as a city up to the crisis and the history of public health and policy as background to the intense story of exposing the crisis by proving that the children of Flint had been directly affected by the change in water source. For me the added family stories and history of science and public health portions of the book are a wonderful addition.
