Don’t let the title scare you, this is a lively story of cross-generational understanding and community.
Londoner Nikki lives on her own above the bar where she works, much to her traditional Punjabi mother’s dismay. When a misunderstanding means Nikki winds up in charge of a basic literacy class for widows at the local Sikh temple, she decides to help them record their inner lives, desires, and creativity. However, the self-appointed “moral police” of the community object to any sort of perceived wrongdoing, and their disapproval has already turned deadly once. Readers should know that there is certainly some erotica included in this book, snippets of the widows’ creative writing, but that is secondary to the sense of fellowship that is built over the course of the story. It is a very cool combination of one woman’s personal growth, and one community’s social growth.
