Gods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach

The invention of time travel has derailed scientific efforts to restore the planet after various ecological and health disasters. But Minh jumps at the chance to lead a small group of scientists sent back to 2024 BCE Mesopotamia to survey the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the hopes of using the knowledge to restore the ecosystem in the future. She wants a look inside the TERN the think tank that controls time travel technology. Meanwhile omens and sightings shake up the large community established on the rivers rocking the political and religious establishments. The story uses sci-fi to make great observations from today about technology in general and how we use it, the banking industry, and generational tensions.
