The Girl who Drank the Moon

Winner of the 2017 Newbery Medal for children's fiction, Kelly Regan Barnhill's story about an accidentally "enmagicked" girl named Luna and her makeshift family -- a kindly witch, a pint-sized dragon, and a swamp monster with the soul of a poet -- is a pure delight. The author navigates some heavy subject matter with grace and narrative skill, confronting head-on the problem of despair and allowing her characters to wrestle with life's moral complexity. The prose is lovely and luminous, and the narration by Christina Moore rises to the occasion. This is a fairy tale both older children and adults will cherish!
