The Secret Life of Bees

Great southern coming of age book. Very strong female character driven plot.

This novel set in the south in 1964, follows a young white girl and her black nanny/friend in their search for who her mother was and finds a lot about her self. They end up in South Carolina at the Boatright Sisters house where the older sister is a well known beekeeper in the region. They are African American. This leads to dealing with some hard issues such as racism and bigotry but also shows trust, connections and friendships that develop along the way between this group of women; This has some real tearjerker moments and humorous ones as well
