Güero is one cool chamaco in this middle grade collection of poetry.
Güero is a word used in Mexico and some parts of Central and South America to denote a person of fair complexion or with blond, red, or light brown (like brown sugar). My mom’s nickname is La Güera, so I immediately knew the child giving voice to this book had to be fair skinned. Güero celebrates his heritage with varied poetic wit and together with friends called Los Bobbys, he details a beautiful life on the border between the United States and Mexico. The Spanish-to-English glossary at the end was my favorite part because of the memories and smiles each word called to mind.
