The lead singer of Alabama Shakes steps out for a soulful solo project.

Howard’s is wonderful blend of throwback laidback r&b and modern stylings. “Stay High” is probably the most radio-friendly and “familiar” piece—made for a leisurely drive, “Georgia” adds a slight church vibe to that same “made for a drive” feeling, and I also loved the spare “Short and Sweet” which showcases her powerful voice. “Goat Head,” though distinctly darker, reminded me vocally of Lizzo in style and content-wise appealed to me specifically as a biracial woman. It’s a fascinating and powerful album.
