“Don’t get took! Read a book!”
This picturebook is a fictionalized story of the National Memorial African Bookstore, which was a vital cultural institution in New York City’s Harlem Community from 1932 to 1974. The store was created and run by the author’s great uncle Lewis Michaux Sr. Selling books was more than a business for him; it was a calling. In addition to selling books about African and African-American culture, the store was also a hub for activism during the civil rights movement.
The primary character in The Book Itch is Lewis Michaux Jr., who tells the story of his father’s obsession with selling books and activism. This is a great book that promotes African American literacy and challenges young readers to be inquisitive and learn from others through engaging in conversation. Not to sound cliché, but its overall message is “knowledge is power” and “books change lives.” Nelson is also the author of the award-winning children’s book, Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal.
