Space-obsessed boy learns about family and the world around him as he records his life on his iPod.
Wow. Just wow. The story is unique in that it is read as if you are listening to Alex's (the MC) recordings. Alex is recording his life to emulate his hero Carl Sagan, who sent a golden record into space, which Alex also wants to do with his golden iPod. It was a tad annoying at first because it legitimately seemed like an 11-year-old made the recordings, but I am so glad I pressed on and got used to it. This approach also makes it a bit of an unreliable narrator situation, but only because Alex has such an optimistically naïve view of his world, which we can only glimpse the true reality of as we "hear" the reactions of the people he meets and shares his story with. You can't help but root for Alex to succeed and see where his journey takes him.
I haven't listened to it personally, but I've been told the audiobook version is a full cast production and I am nothing if not excited to listen to it.
Great book with a good cast of characters and a different format that many may not have experienced before. Definitely recommend this one be picked up.
