In this sweet, nearly wordless book, Julián learns about the world around them and embraces their place in it. It’s hard to find trans/gender nonconforming children’s books that I, as a trans person, can stomach. Here, we get to experience Julián’s wonder, creativity, and unique identity without enduring a lecture or having to watch them shamed for their expression before they can find acceptance. Julián is a mermaid and that's all there is to it.
