The Story of a Life-Changing Journey to a Sacred Place
Martin Sheen plays a grief-stricken father who decides to finish his estranged son’s pilgrimage on The Camino, after he dies, unexpectantly, two days into the journey. Throughout Sheen’s 500-mile trek across Spain from France, he reluctantly encounters three other pilgrims who will change his life forever.
Walking the Camino refers to a hiking journey to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. This practice dates back to medieval times. Legend has it that the sacred remains of St. James, the Apostle of Christ, were discovered and interred there in the 9th century. Although this is still a popular pilgrimage for devoted Christians, today, thousands of others from different backgrounds embark on this arduous journey each year seeking inspiration and spiritual transformation.
If you enjoy this film and want to learn more, I would also suggest that you watch Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago, which is a wonderful documentary about this spiritual journey. It is available on Kanopy and Hoopla.
