Leidah and Maeva are made of magic and the sea, and that can only be contained for so long.
Somewhere cold and wet by the sea, where fishermen are the typical working-class and feeders of the community, there is a woman who does not belong. She is trapped. Following a traditional Icelandic/Scottish mythos, an enigmatic Maeva is stolen from her life and cornered into making the most of a new one. She almost becomes comfortable when her daughter Leidah (Lie-duh) is born, but the child is a constant reminder of the magic and the sea that are just beyond Maeva's reach.
The book is mainly from Leidah's perspective, but the women in the story blend together in a way that makes it the tale of any woman with a reason not to feel free. Peiter, Maeva's sudden husband and in many ways her keeper, almost seems to be the hero at first. His relationship with Leidah is pure and loving, he provides for and defends his family, but how did this family come to be? Is he protective of his family because he loves them, or because he values them as possessions? On the surface he can almost be defended, but in the end, being a kind man is not enough to rescue him from the consequences of his selfish decisions.
Becoming Leidah is a historical/fantasy for high school age readers and older who like books like The Invisible Life of Addie Larue (V.E. Schwab), shows like Game of Thrones (HBO), and movies like The Lighthouse (2019).
