Prairie Lotus

Let's take a different look at the prairie.

Park tells the story of Hanna, a young girl in the 1880s, who is the daughter of a Chinese mother and a white father. Hanna and her father move to the Dakota Territory and this is the story of how they face racism and discrimination as they attempt to make their new home. Park does a wonderful job with character development and creating a realistic storyline.

Growing up, I read "Little House on the Prairie" and in my little mind, that was the truth and only fictional story about the settlers in the late 19th century. In the past year, we as a library have received many questions about books that can be read in place of or in addition to "classics." "Prairie Lotus" is that book.
