A picture book that dispels stereotypes
This a special book because contrary to so many depictions in our culture, the author shows the protagonist, a young Black boy, as a normal kid that exudes energy, creativity, curiosity, and several other positive qualities. One important thing to point out here is that on the dedication page the author lists the names of seven young unarmed African American men/boys that were gunned down either by police or vigilantes over the past decade. All these young men were murdered because the shooter saw them as a “threat” and didn’t recognize their humanity. The juxtaposition of this dedication along with the text that follows provides a powerful message for readers. For me, as a Black man, the message here is clear, but expressed in an indirect manner. Society needs to stop demonizing children of color! I think this short, simple picture book should be required reading for law enforcement.
