A Sky-Blue Bench

A Schneider Family Book Award honoree, for books embodying an artistic disability experience for children

Aria’s prosthetic leg makes it difficult for her to sit on the floor with her classmates in class, but there are no more benches in the school. They have all been burned for warmth during the war and only scraps and pieces of wood are left. Determined to find a solution so she can stay in school, Aria consults with a nearby carpenter and learns to build a bench for herself.
The Schneider Family Book Award honors titles that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience for children and young adults. Bahram Rahman’s A Sky-Blue Bench does just that with beautifully bright illustrations and a story of a young girl whose perseverance makes a better life for herself and her classmates.
