Home is where the crazy is!
This film is a hilarious laugh-out-loud movie starring comedian Jo Koy about a dysfunctional, but close knit Filipino American family in California that is forced to come together for a holiday gathering. Sound familiar? Comedic films about dysfunctional families forced to come together for a holiday meal is a common trope. However, what I found interesting about this one is that it isn’t set between the traditional American holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Rather, it is takes place during Easter. Upon further research I learned that Christianity, primarily Roman Catholicism, is the major religious belief system in the Philippines, which includes over 80% of the population. And Good Friday and Easter are particularly important holidays across the nation. So, it seems appropriate that a film that is steeped in Filipino culture would be set during a holiday that has so much meaning to them.
