Shirley Chisholm is a Verb

An inspiring children’s biography

Shirley Chisholm was the first black women elected to the U.S. Congress and was known for her ground-breaking run for president in 1972.  Today, she is remembered by many as “paving-the-way” for diversity in our federal government.  I liked this children’s biography because while telling this story of her incredible career the author focuses on the verbs, action words, that symbolized her life.  Then she challenges young readers to think about the verbs that will characterize their own life.  And finally, I really liked that the author included a few memorable quotes from Chisholm.  My favorite is “service to others is the rent you pay for your room on earth.”
