Jason Isbell is one of my favorite writers and Weathervanes is another absolute winner of an album from the driving beats of “Death Wish” to the weary wail of “Middle of the Morning” to the parental fear and anguish of “Save the World” written in the wake of another mass shooting. “Cast Iron Skillet” is a mix of adage and character sketch  and “Miles” distinctly has the feel of a modern take on 70s road jams. In many ways the whole album is the wonderful equivalent of a collection of contemporary southern short stories. Fans of Tom Petty, Springsteen, and John Prine would all find something in Isbell’s work.
