A mystery involving inheritance and murder in 1920s Bombay!
When Perveen Mistry, Bombay’s first female lawyer, realizes something may be amiss with the inheritance of the three widows of a recently deceased client, she decides to look into the issue herself. The three women live in purdah - seclusion, not speaking to any men directly - and Perveen, as a woman, is the only one who can speak to them in person. However, upon her visit, she discovers the corpse of the family’s household agent in the main area of the house, where the widows never set foot. Soon after, the eldest daughter of the family goes missing. Are these two crimes related? Perveen struggles to investigate the crimes, despite dismissal and pushback from the police and her own family.
Read by Soneela Nankani, this audiobook was very well done. I enjoyed listening to the various accents that Nankani adopts to distinguish each character, and she conveys the tension of the murder investigation clearly through her narration.
