As a child, Tarisai discovers she is half-ehru: a spirit forced to fulfil any wish. When her mother commands her to kill the crown prince of the kingdom of Aritsar, Tarisai chooses to rewrite her story and find a different purpose. The romance takes a backseat to character development and world building in this young adult book, making it a refreshing change of pace from the standard instalove stories in the genre. Ifueko excels at depicting PTSD and abusive relationships while showing there is hope and happiness on the other side. This is a great read for someone looking for a book a bit outside the young adult box.
