Rosemary Harper is the newest crew member aboard the Wayfarer, a space ship designed to make worm holes for interstellar travel. We get to learn the ropes with her, and make friends with the multi-species crew. This book is character driven and almost episodic. Readers who crave a little bit of action/suspense, but not at their risk of their own personal peace, will enjoy this. There is a lot of worldbuilding and multiple different alien species to keep track of, yet still the pace is leisurely and the reading easy going. Not everything that happens in this book is cozy. However, the themes include found families and a culture that is, overall, more accepting than our own. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet made me feel warm and safe, despite the frigid emptiness of space. And it’s the first in a series, so that means there is even more to love!
