Working through the stages of grief, with the help of a creepy puppet.
I am not a horror girl – which sounds falser with every horror book review I do. But Grady Hendrix has done it again with this book. Louise has returned to Charleston after the tragic death of both of her parents. What she thinks will be a quick cleanout of the house and settling of their estate, becomes a literal battle for her life.
Hendrix has an ability to create worlds where the impossible feels real and makes you care about what happens to the characters. Part of what makes his work so attractive to me is his use of dark humor and walking the fine line between gross yet realistic.
As with most horror, I feel a trigger warning is beneficial: puppets, self-harm, inanimate objects come to life, and possession. For a bit of a spoiler, I never once thought I would say this combination of words, but I did when referencing this book, “Did you get to the part where the taxidermy squirrels come to life?”
