Two couples meet and share stories until one of them, a famous author, decides to publish another's story, opening up all sorts of secrets behind "closed doors."  Loosely based on the life of Somerset Maugham and introduces Sun Yat Sen, the great fighter for Chinese independence, this novel explores issues of race, gender, bigotry, infidelity, and colonial power.
