Goddess of the River

A reimagining of one of Hinduism’s foundational epics, as told by the River Ganga.

Author Vaishnavi Patel turns her attention from the Ramayana to the Mahabharata in this imaginative reinterpretation of the epic. Told through the eyes of the goddess Ganga, personification of the Ganges River, and her son Bhishma, patriarch in name, if not blood, of the Kuru dynasty, the story covers the events leading up to and through the end of the fatal Kurukshetra war between cousins. Patel captures the complexities of the characters and their conflicting oaths and desires, in a way that remains respectful towards the original story.
