Merry-Go-Round

Coming of age when the world in constantly spinning.

Told in ten chapters, each part tells the story of a pair of young adults one of whom was also featured in the previous chapter. This chain format builds context and creates an inviting interconnectedness over the course of the book. I loved the mix of high stakes and low-drama arcs-- it felt sincere and gave the characters a depth we don't always get in a single graphic novel. The illustrations are stylized and relaxed, but use bright, striking colors (how bright and striking changes a little with each story) to make an impact.
I would recommend Merry-Go-Round to readers who enjoy low-intensity contemporary graphic novels and stories about group dynamics like Mimosa by Archie Bongiovanni and Himiwari House by Harmony Becker.
