Greatest Hits: 35 Years of Soul

Farewell, Mr. Beverly

There is something very special about the power of voice and musical talent. For a lot of people, the passing of Frankie Beverly felt like a personal loss. Many, many people will tell you Frankie Beverly and Maze was played if there was any family gathering or celebration (whoever oversaw the playlist, knew to ensure Frankie Beverly and Maze was included.) If you went to Frankie Beverly and Maze concerts, or Essence Music Festivals “back in the day” you knew what was in store when you saw him walk out in the all-white attire and of course, the cap.  I started to list all around favorites that are on this version, but rest assured they are all there. If you are not familiar with the group’s music, this might be a good edition to listen to. To circle back about a listing of songs, it does not seem appropriate to not mention 3 songs. The first is Before I let Go. Even though the song is about the breakup of a relationship, it is an all-time favorite for many. Second, Joy and Pain. Some would summarize this song as the experience of life. Also, if you attended one of their concerts, yes, you know, as part of the audience, you sung this song aloud in unison with everyone else in the audience. As this staff pick ends, the 3rd song would be The Golden Time of Day. The relaxing tempo and lyrics which speak of acts of reflection and appreciation seem most appropriate for a closing and to say thank you and rest well, Mr. Beverly.
