Part family history, part sociological critique. All worthwhile!
I originally placed a hold on this after seeing the cover. And then I got hooked by an early chapter all about a religious routine of family trips to Costco. “American Bulk” is exactly what it says it is: essays on excess. It’s less prescriptive and more exploratory, narrowing in on different areas of the author’s life and family, all tied to their relationship to (over)consumption.
I really liked this book. It reminds me in some ways of Honor Levy’s “My First Book”, in that I think they’re both most relatable to a Millennial/Gen Z audience, but “American Bulk” is way less alienating. Do with that what you will!
