As Sherriff Brody Dern investigates the variety of secrets, old enmities, and prejudices that surface threaten his ability to keep his hometown safe.
Krueger, despite fairly plain prose, draws both his characters and setting richly. The characters are complicated, but still feel grounded in reality. The picture he draws of a rural, postwar Midwest also feels true form, highlighting the highs and lows of small town life.
Throw in a compelling whodunit with several twists and turns and you have a mystery well worth your time.
