This leisurely historical fiction novel has worldbuilding that rivals the best escapist fantasy!

Despite the book opening up with a dead body and mystery to solve, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride is a slower paced and tightly plotted historical fiction novel. Readers get an intimate view of the inhabitants of Chicken Hill, made up of mostly African Americans and Jewish Immigrants (many with physical disabilities and neuro-differences). This minority community bordering Pottstown, Pennsylvania includes a Jewish owned music club, daring to book popular Black jazz musicians, and the Jewish owned grocery store, the heart and soul of Chicken Hill.

This story really shines in its dialogue, well rounded set of characters, and ability to build a realistic and intricate setting. The narrator was top notch, giving the characters unique voices and enhancing my listening experience. I was so moved by this book that I both cried and cheered as the story unfolded. American-History fans should give this one a try!
